Boyle Village Conservation Group

The Boyle Village Conservation Trust was formally kicked off in 2013, after some keen interest by two locals to try to bring more bird life back into the area.

The mission of the group is to improve the native birdlife in the area surrounding the village. The land immediately south and east of the village is owned by DOC (Department of Conservation), and predator control is performed on this land by both DOC, Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre and Forest & Bird. The landowners in the village are keenly aware of the impact that stoats, possums and other predators have made on the local birdlife. We also work with other conservation groups and interested parties to ensure our mahi is aligned.

Our main focus is predator control, targeting stoats, rats, mice and possums. As a small group we are aware that technology is a huge advantage. We are keenly watch this technology space, to ensure we are utilising effective approaches. Our coverage area for trapping is approximately 50 hectares around the Boyle River Settlement. In 2022 we successfully funded and deployed mustelid traps up the St James to the Boyle Flats Hut.
