Bring on the Birds, Gore Bay

We are a community-led project working to protect and enhance our local biodiversity by involving young and old in our predator trapping and educational activities and having fun in nature.

We support native birds thriving in our high ecological-value coastal area from the Jed River just north of Gore Bay to the mouth of the Hurunui River. We have sandy beach between rocky headlands, gravel bars, the Jed River estuary as well as hills and valleys of remnant and regenerating native bush with streams. The multiple ecosystem types support numbers of breeding and migratory birds and associated species. No other coastal settlement in the area has all these geographical features that support so many of our indigenous marine, freshwater and terrestrial species.
If the birds are thriving, then it is likely other native species are also thriving.

Thanks to our community support, volunteers have built custom trap boxes and now maintain 150 traps. Since starting in 2013 we have accessed conservation funding as a sub-group of the Gore Bay and Port Robinson Residents Association. Cheviot MenzShed has generously prepared materials for our community trap box building days and assisted children building their Rat Trap Boxes. We can’t do it without your help – thank you.

Taking children out in nature has been a focus because we believe that if you get out in nature, you are more likely to protect it. We’ve assisted Enviroschools programmes and worked with Cheviot Area School.

Volunteers are always welcome – Come join us.
