Hurunui District Landcare Group
The Hurunui District Landcare Group is a farmer-led, farmer-driven initiative which takes a proactive and collaborative approach to managing, protecting and enhancing the natural and physical resources both on-farm and within North Canterbury’s unique catchment communities.
We have a number of sub-catchment groups who we support with funding and applications for biodiversity protection and enhancement. This work includes pest control of mustelids, ungulates, rodents and possums. Some of our groups are also involved in landscape -scale weed control programmes for the regeneration and protection of native biodiversity.
We run several stream walks each year to help our members better understand water quality in their catchment and what freshwater biodiversity is present in their streams. This involves NIWA’s SHMAK kit, Hills surface water quality kits and eDNA montoring.
HDLG supports members to achieve their NZFAP+ and other supplier accreditation programs. With this we will help them understand what indigenous terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity is present and identify opportunities to protect and enhance biodiversity on farm, and develop a plan to monitor progress.
