Lottery Bush Conservation Group

The Lottery Bush Scenic Reserve is a 186 hectare area of remnant old growth forest reached from the Inland Road, 12km north of Waiau. Sitting between the Lottery and Wandle Rivers, the forest was left untouched when surrounding bush was felled for building timber and cleared for farming. The mixed beech and podocarp forest is extremely rare in Canterbury and has mature specimens of mountain and black beech, rimu, matai and kahikatea throughout, as well as a high diversity of plants, animals and fungi.

The Lottery Bush Conservation Group is a partnership of local people and organisations working with DOC to promote access to and conserve the bush. The group has built a car park on the Inland Road, established an access route to the reserve and created a loop path through the forest. The group is undertaking possum control and has a long-term goal to deer fence the entire forest so that deer, pigs and livestock can be removed.
