Nina Valley Restoration Group, Hurunui College

The Nina Valley Restoration Group began in 2008, spearheaded by students from Hurunui College under the guidance of science teacher Tim Kelly. The project is a partnership with the Department of Conservation in the Lake Sumner Forest Park.

Every month or so, students and some parents take part in popular weekend camps based at the Nina Hut, to check the school’s 20km network of traplines. The work is extra-curricular, but related activities are regularly incorporated into classwork. The students have also been able to participate in the kiwi project run by DOC in the Nina Valley, which began with the translocation of Raroa (Great Spotted Kiwi) from Arthur’s Pass. Students made some of the travel boxes that the kiwi were transported in, and learned about handling the birds and how to change their tracking transmitters.

The Nina Valley project is being helped by the Doubtless Valley Trust to extend the traplines and maintain traps.
