Northern Pegasus Bay (Hurunui) Coastcare
This group of volunteers came together in January 2023 and formed the Northern Pegasus Bay (Hurunui) Coastcare Incorporated Society.. Our focus is the coastline from the southern boundary of the Hurunui District, (north of the Ashley River mouth), to the “Rocks” north of the Waipara River. This area has high biodiversity values and hosts several rare native plant and bird species, especially around the estuaries.
Our objectives include; protecting existing native flora and fauna in the coastal zone, increasing biodiversity, predator trapping (rats, mice, stoats, possums and hedgehogs) and promoting safe recreational use that respects the natural environment.
We currently undertake trapping from the Ashworth’s Beach area northwards to the Kowai River mouth and are also planting native trees and shrubs on the walkway/cycleway north of Leithfield Beach, and at other locations. This planting will be ongoing. Recent funding will now allow us to extend trapping over the whole coastal area and provide fencing for two sensitive areas. . Initial funding support for trapping has come from the Mainpower Environment Fund, and plants have been funded from Trees that Count and also donated by CJs Nursery and Trees for Canterbury. . We are actively seeking new funding sources.
We welcome volunteers to help us with tree planting and checking predator traps. Planting working bees are advertised on local Facebook pages. If you are interested in helping with planting preparation, tree planting, planting maintenance and predator trapping please contact the Secretary.
