Hurunui Weedbusters at Tipapa Stream Reserve
Saturday 22 February, 10 – 12.30pm, plus afternoon option
Another great outing for Hurunui Weedbusters took place at Tipapa Stream Reserve. We had a good turnout of regular volunteers and were joined by helpers from Greta Valley village whose Residents Association began planting at this council reserve around 10 years ago.
Weed-whacking around the path and plants, releasing them from smothering grass and tackling woody weeds such as poplar saplings, blackberry and broom made the morning pass quickly.
At lunchtime some of us visited the nearby Birdsong Project restoration at the Scargill Domain and were impressed by the scale of the planting – in just two years – on both sides of the stream, and the general health of the plants.
This is another project taken up by a dedicated group of community volunteers, most who live locally. Well worth a stop and look around if you are travelling the highway!

Hurunui Weedbusters at Tipapa Stream Reserve
Saturday 22 February, 10 – 12.30pm, plus afternoon option
Join our volunteers for our next working bee at Tipapa Stream Reserve, a small council-owned reserve at Greta Valley Village. Since 2014 local residents have been planting a variety of natives there on either side of the stream, transforming the reserve into a nature haven for the wider community to enjoy.
Our jobs will include clearing around plants, to release them from smothering grass and other weedy vegetation. There may be some tougher weeds such as blackberry to tackle for those who are up for this.
After the work, we’ll have a relaxing lunch at the Birdsong restoration project in the nearby Scargill Domain, then take a walk through the sites that are being planted and tended by dedicated locals.
