Hurunui Weedbusters head to Amberley Beach
Saturday 18 October, 9:30am – 12:30pm
A keen group of Hurunui Weedbusters and local people turned out to rescue a neglected patch of native plants at Amberley Beach on Saturday morning, 18 October. Under the guidance of Kevin Roche of Northern Pegasus Bay Coastcare, volunteers of all ages cleared broom, lupins, ice plant and long grass from around the plants, giving them room to breathe again. As well as the enjoyment of doing a great job together, the volunteers’ reward was a bountiful morning tea provided by Faith Roche and, for one family, loads of nutritious lupin to feed their sheep!
The original plantings on the site at the north end of Grierson Reserve were by Amberley Beach Coast Care group, which wound up a few years ago. With the site now freshly cleared, Kevin and his team are looking forward to replenishing it next year with new plants. These will be mainly ngaio, cabbage tree and flax.
