Hurunui Weedbusters enjoyed a fine winter morning helping locals rescue natives at a council reserve by South Amberley Beach. Some eagerly laid into gorse and blackberry, while others methodically removed spreading lupins. We also found and dispatched a rogue spindleberry. Another option for volunteers was planting out harakeke, cabbage tree, saltmarsh ribbonwood and ngaio plants under the guidance of Kevin Roche from North Pegasus Bay Coastcare group. The site was planted about 20 years ago but has become neglected and overgrown, prompting a local resident to begin clearing it himself. Kevin plans to progressively extend the cleared area and do more planting, with help from volunteers of course.
